Beavers in the Wild

What are we proposing?

Cornwall Wildlife Trust are leading and coordinating a project to reintroduce wild beavers onto our Helman Tor Nature Reserve, which sits in the Par catchment.
We are aiming to introduce enough pairs, or family units, so that there is a strong genetic pool.

Subject to a successful licence being granted by Natural England, we will work with landowners to manage any impacts and monitor any changes to the landscape.
Our Beaver Officer is in position to prepare our wild release licence application, speak to local landowners and develop a Beaver Management Plan.

Potential impacts

We understand that some local landowners and stakeholder might have concerns about the reintroduction of beavers to the catchment.

Therefore, we want to make sure that we speak to everyone who could be potentially impacted by the engagement, identify any risks and work together to develop a Beaver Management Plan.

Why do we want to bring beavers back to Cornwall?

Beavers are super ecosystem engineers. They create wetlands that can significantly benefit other wildlife, absorb carbon dioxide, reduce flooding and improve water quality.

We know that much of Cornwall is highly suitable for the reintroduction of beaver, with many steep sided valleys and suitable vegetation.

We would like to see beavers living wild in Cornish rivers again, so that we can collectively enjoy the benefits they bring.

How can you get involved?

We are currently in the planning stage for our formal engagement period happening in Spring 2024.

This will involve events across the Par Catchment area, where you can attend in person to find out more information about our wild beaver release project and formally share your thoughts.

More information on our formal consultation date and locations coming soon.
